How long should tyres last?

All tyres, irrespective of the brand or manufacturer, have a different expected tyre life. But often, there are guidelines we can follow when it comes to our vehicle’s tyre life. How long do car tyres last?

Tyre life is often dependant on a variety of factors, which means it’s hard to put an exact figure on a tyre’s expected longevity. Factors include:

• The quality of the tyre – a low costing tyre will often be made to a lower quality. This will likely hinder the car tyre life compared to a sturdy perhaps slightly more expensive tyre
• Road conditions the tyre is subjected to – if your tyres are continually exposed to rough terrain and road conditions, this is likely to damage the tyre over time and effect the tyre life
• How well it’s cared for – this includes both the driving style (e.g. going over potholes, hitting the kerb, driving carelessly) and the care of your tyre from a maintenance perspective (regular services and checks of your tyres)

Should I invest in expensive tyres?

Often people are put off by spending a large amount of money on tyres. But are the initial costs worth it for the extended tyre life or lower maintenance fees?

Again, this depends entirely on how you drive your car, and how these tyres are looked after. If you bought one of the top range tyres and drove it over potholes every day and rough terrain, your tyres are still going to decrease in tyre life expectancy.

A compromise is usually going for mid-range tyres – if you care for them and drive carefully, they could be a good value investment that could save you money in the future.
